During the full-scale Russian invasion and battles for Chernihiv, hostilities broke out in the vicinity of the “Yatseve” cemetery, during which the territory of the cemetery was subjected to shelling from the positions of the occupying forces. The probable date of the shelling, when the Chapel of Archangel Michael was destroyed, is March 13, 2022, the same day when the Church of Saint Theodosius, located right there in “Yatseve” cemetery, was destroyed by a shell. However, the exact date and circumstances of the shelling require further clarification.

According to the message on the information resource "Social. Chernihiv" as a result of shelling and the movement of military equipment, sector 108  of the cemetery, where the participants of the Anti-Terrorist Operation and the Operation of the United Forces are buried, the tombstones of the soldiers, the memorial sign in honor of the soldiers who died for Ukraine, and the cemetery Chapel were partially destroyed.

Kostyantyn Borsuk, acting director of the "Yatseve" cemetery, said: "The Chapel is a civil structure and it did not last. We have only to break it and rebuild it anew. All supports have been hit, but those that haven’t, they do not function."

The Chapel of Archangel Michael in honor of the deceased participants of the ATO and the operation of the United Forces was erected in sector 108 of the “Yatseve” cemetery between 2016 and 2018. Its grand opening was on November 21, 2018. NGO Edyna Rodina Chernihiv Oblast acted as the main initiator of the construction.
