On March 22, 2022, presumably during the mortar shelling of the city of Izium, one of the oldest stone churches of the city, a monument of architecture - the Holy Ascension Cathedral, built in 1826, was damaged. It is in this church that the main sacred relic of the Eparchy of Izium is kept - the Pisky Icon of the Mother of God. The message about the damage of the cathedral appeared on the official website of the Eparchy of Izium. The window panes in the church were broken, the walls were damaged, the roof was partially destroyed. According to the rector of the church, the porch of the cathedral and columns were also significantly damaged. Meanwhile, the people who suffered the shelling were hiding in the church, and humanitarian aid was distributed near the church. After Russian troops took control of Izium on April 1, propagandists made a video: an interview with a priest and civilians who were hiding in the basement, but accused the Armed Forces of Ukraine of the shelling, whereas at the time when the shelling was carried out, Izium was still controlled by the Ukrainian side.
