During the efforts of the Russian occupiers to capture Sievierodonetsk on March 10, 13 and 16, 2022, shells fell on the territory of the St. Nativity of Christ Cathedral of the city. Shell fragments damaged the icon of the Holy Protection of the Theotokos, the windows, the mosaic icon of St. Panteleimon the Healer on the facade of the church. As of September 2022, the roof and walls of the cathedral are damaged. A building on the church grounds is in an emergency condition. The cathedral was built from 1994 to 2000. In 2000, the cathedral was dedicated, and in 2007 it was upgraded to the status of a cathedral following the creation of an independent Sievierodonetsk Eparchy.
